TOYOTA
Yaris
XP130 generation, 2011-2020
Our verdict
8.0 / 10
A cheap, tough first car, as long as the recalls were done and the hybrid was looked after
The third-generation Yaris is one of the safest bets in this size of car. What Car's owner survey ranked it first among small used cars in 2023, and most of its faults are small. The risks are specific: open recalls from the early years, a hybrid that was left to go flat or never serviced, the optional CVT automatic, and the rare 1.4 diesel if it only did town trips. Check those and you are buying a car that will cost very little to keep.
The XP130 is the third-generation Toyota Yaris, built from 2011 to 2020 with a facelift around 2014. It is a small five-door hatchback (a three-door was sold too) that is easy to park, cheap to insure and very forgiving to own. It was built in France and has a reputation for just getting on with it.
