Our verdict

7.4 / 10

A calm, cheap-to-own family car, if you pick the petrol or check the diesel carefully

The T27 Avensis is comfortable, spacious, five-star safe and has a good reputation for being easy to live with. The Valvematic petrol engines show no well-known weak points in the sources we found. The diesels need more care: the older Toyota-built 2.0 and 2.2 D-4D have cylinder head concerns, the 2015-on BMW-built diesels were caught up in an EGR cooler recall, and any diesel can clog its DPF and EGR on short trips. Check recalls and service history before you buy.

The Avensis T27 is Toyota's third-generation Avensis, sold from 2009 to 2018 as a saloon and an estate (called the Tourer). It is a medium-sized family car in the same size class as the Skoda Octavia and VW Passat. It was never exciting to drive, but it is quiet, roomy and sensible. It was common as a taxi, a company car and a family car, so many are now older and high-mileage.
