A refined, solid premium saloon, but expensive when the diesel or automatic goes wrong

The B9 A4 (2015-2024) is quiet, well built and a five-star Euro NCAP car, and checked-over examples hold their value. The 2.0 TFSI 190 petrol and a well-kept 2.0 TDI are the sensible choices. The risks are diesel emissions kit (AdBlue, DPF, EGR), coolant leaks, screens that freeze and a dual-clutch gearbox that needs an oil change. Buy on service history, not on the badge.

The Audi A4 B9 is a compact executive car, sold as a saloon or an Avant (estate), from late 2015 to 2024. It competes with the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class and is a big step up in comfort and tech from the A3, with a quiet cabin and a digital instrument display (Audi calls it Virtual Cockpit) on many cars. It was the fifth-generation A4 and replaced the B8.
